Scorched Earth is a thought-provoking installation reproducing the aftermath of a destructive wildfire. Visitors will view and advance through a grid of blackened trees, charred earth, ash, and debris within the confines of a seemingly lifeless forest. As they process its sights, scents, and sounds, art adventurers will be enveloped by the magnitude of a mega-fire.
Scorched Earth exposes climate and capitalism as the primary drivers of increasingly frequent and ferocious mega-fires (Bad Fire), while honoring ecologically grounded Native American practices (Good Fire) that sustained healthy forests before European colonization.
As the Hudson Valley experiences the unprecedented continental impacts of the Canadian wildfires, Scorched Earth helps us appreciate and reckon with the consequences of our modern lifestyle and provides an opening for a better way forward.
Tierra Encendida es una instalación que invita a la reflexión y que reproduce las consecuencias de un incendio forestal. Los visitantes observarán mientras caminan a través de una red de árboles ennegrecidos, tierra carbonizada, cenizas y escombros dentro de los confines de un bosque aparentemente sin vida. Amy Bandolik is a culinary curator, coffee adorer, community organizer, natural connector, spirited collaborator, gifted photographer, unconventional counselor, and an accomplished charcuterist. Amy holds a master's in Counseling, worked at NYU as a counselor, served as Creative Director for a NYC-based Food Tour company, owns Hudson Valley Food & Farm Tours, and is the Community Engagement Manager for the Beacon & Newburgh Farmers’ Markets.
Thomas Bregman is a builder, painter, political organizer, hiker, anti-war protestor, farmer, beer-lover, father, chainsaw aficionado, and earth-art sculptor. He holds a bachelor's degree in International Relations from SUNY Stony Brook and a master’s degree in Sustainability from Antioch University. Tom has worked in the technology, energy, campaign, real estate, and nonprofit sectors, last as Executive Director of the Hudson Highlands Nature Museum.

Trompe l’œil is a french term meaning “to deceive the eye,” and refers to paintings that create the illusion of real architectural elements. Trompe l’œil paintings are typically made directly on walls and ceilings, and are meant to enhance the grandeur and perception of space. Curiously, a sort of illusionistic painting is also found on sites in Newburgh, on the plywood affixed to boarded-over windows of empty buildings. These pared-down trompe l’oeil paintings are made to look as if the windows were still in-tact.
The trompe l’oeil painting created on the dilapidated carriage house behind Quality Row straddles history: pointing to the past by referring to the former carriage house doors, acknowledging the complexity of urban issues facing Newburgh today, and pointing towards the future by imagining the building’s restoration.
El término francés trompe l'œil significa "engañar la vista" y se refiere a aquellas pinturas que crean una ilusión óptica, el ojo ve representado un elemento arquitectónico donde no lo hay. Sonya Blesofsky is an installation artist whose site-responsive sculptural work employs architectural interventions, cast sculptures, drawing, embossed paper surfaces, and found architectural objects. Blesofsky received her MFA from the San Francisco Art Institute and BA from UC Santa Cruz. She has received numerous residencies and fellowships, including Urban Glass, the Lower East Side Printshop, Museum of Arts and Design, RAIR Philly, Smack Mellon, Dieu Donne, Iaspis Stockholm, and MacDowell. Blesofsky’s work has been shown in New York at Spencer Brownstone Gallery, Mixed Greens, Wave Hill, Present Co, and Cuchifritos. Blesofsky’s work has been reviewed in The Village Voice, San Francisco Chronicle, New York Times, Art Fag City, The Brooklyn Rail, among other. Blesofsky lives and works in New York City.

Mycelium, in all its forms, provides a system of communication across the planet. Where one mushroom feels something, others far away react to what is happening. People (whether they know it or not) are connected in the very same way. All living things are a part of the same collective consciousness. But with mushrooms, you just gotta know where to look. My work as a whole is about providing a vantage point for our connectedness on earth. Getting to step into those split second moments with my camera allows me a space to understand who we (all living things) truly are.
El micelio, en todas sus formas, representa un sistema de comunicación sobre el planeta tierra. Cuando un hongo siente algo, otros, aunque estén lejos, reaccionan. Las personas (lo sepan o no) están conectadas de la misma forma. Los seres vivos, todos, son parte de una misma conciencia colectiva. Con los hongos, sólo hay que saber dónde buscar. Khalidah Carrington is a 29 year-old, New York-based, multidisciplinary artist. She currently works in illustration, graphic design, and photography. Art, in all its forms, has been a part of her life from the beginning. Over the past 16 years, drawing grew into painting, painting became graphic design, and graphic design sparked photography. Since 2016, she’s honed her skills to build brand identifications, actualize content for companies and artists, curate sets and design props for short films, and make personal work that has pushed her creative boundaries. Thematically, her strong suit is identity. She gives life to her photography by establishing a fortified sense of identity in all of her artistic choices. Clients benefit greatly from this level of actualization; each photograph is their vision, refined. In Khalidah’s eyes, every problem, small or large, has a creative solution.
Khalidah Carrington es una artista multidisciplinaria de 29 años que vive en Nueva York. Actualmente trabaja en ilustración, diseño gráfico y fotografía. Napkin Reveries is inspired by the artist’s experiences working in the banquet industry. During an event, guests’ unconsumed beverages are collected and thrown into large buckets alongside cocktail napkins and garnishes. The napkin fibers rip apart and swirl around in a revolting mass of liquid. In this installation, a variety of wet paper pulps are used to cover glass serving plates, allowing the paper to take on the decorative textures of the plates as it dries. Contrasting the standardization of paper production and the diminishing personal use of paper in contemporary times, it is intended to be emblematic of unseen interactions between event guests and service staff. The installation prompts contemplation on class divisions, consumption, and labor while showcasing paper as an artistic medium.
Napkin Reveries se inspira en la experiencia del artista en la industria de banquetes. Ella Desmond received an MFA in Printmaking from Pratt Institute in 2017 and a BFA in Printmaking from Louisiana State University in 2013. Her interdisciplinary studio practice spans performance, poetry, and a range of printmaking mediums such as relief, lithography, screen print, letterpress, and papermaking. Desmond has been a faculty member at the Parsons School of Design since 2019 where she teaches courses in printmaking and book arts. Her current body of work explores the intersection between tragedy, comedy, and the service industry. Desmond lives and works in Brooklyn and Newburgh, New York.

A beauty that blooms only when the timing is right; the connector of life.
Decomposing what is not meant to live forever. Again, and again, and again.
Her webs extend beyond this existence. Living hidden, beneath the surface.In a world that is constantly changing via incredible leaps in technology and unbelievable strains upon the environment, I question our connection (or loss of) to the land. How do we arrive at a balance between technology and nature? At what point do we begin to realize that we are not moving through a passive landscape but through a reflection of our disconnection with the sacredness of the earth itself?
By creating interactive environments that question our human impact, I bridge the gap between what we perceive as reality and the actual, overlooked effects of our mass consumption. I use a variety of materials and techniques, often incorporating found objects and natural materials, to create site-specific installations, sculptures, and interventions in the landscape. These works are designed to engage viewers with the natural world, to provoke questions about our relationship to the environment, and to encourage a sense of responsibility for its care and preservation.
My goal as an environmental artist is to spark conversations about our relationship with the natural world and inspire positive change in the ways we interact with it. I hope to encourage people to be more active in protecting our planet and recognize the profound impact our actions have on the health and well-being of our world.

Sulfur is a naturally occurring crystalline element that carries a negative ionic charge. When coming in contact with it, sulfur neutralizes the positive ions that linger in our bodies, which are responsible for a myriad of health ailments. In this sculpture, sulfur—a by-product of the fossil fuel industry—has been repurposed into a meditation seat. You are invited to sit on the sculpture, matching the direction of its body print. Take this opportunity to relax and let go of any thoughts or physical sensations. Close your eyes and breathe deeply for as long as you need to.
El azufre es un elemento cristalino natural que lleva una carga iónica negativa, cuando se entra en contacto con él, neutraliza los iones positivos que permanecen en nuestro cuerpo, responsables de innumerables enfermedades. Romina Gonzales (b. Lima, Peru, 1989) is a New York-based interdisciplinary artist working with elemental energy in the pursuit of connection with self and spirit. She moves between sculpture, printmaking, and performance, using the intrinsic properties of materials to open up possibilities in understanding, seeing, and believing. By portraying gestures and narratives through material responses, she questions givens and offers alternative perspectives. Influences come from wellness, spirituality, science, and the dissonant narratives that uphold society. Works include intimate sculptural objects, large-scale architectural installations, interactive happenings, and disparate syntaxes in written and spoken word.

Philippe Halaburda (b. 1972) is a French-born artist living and working in New York since 2016, and in Newburgh since 2020, where he continues to transform his art of psychogeographical mapping in exciting and innovative ways. He studied graphic arts at the Superior School of Art EDTA Sornas in Paris. After his studies, he traveled to discover different styles and movements of European Art and develop his own style. As a self-taught artist, whole urban environments are being encoded into his visual language. His work has been exhibited throughout Europe, with his first solo representation by the Peyton Wright Gallery in the United States in 2013. Since then, he has been in various American and French galleries.
Philippe Halaburda, nacido en 1972, es un artista de origen francés que vive y trabaja en Nueva York desde 2016, radicado en Newburgh desde 2020, donde continúa transformando su arte de trazar el recorrido psicogeográfico de manera innovadora. Estudió artes gráficas en la Escuela Superior de Arte EDTA Sornas de París. Mycelium Connection speaks to my thoughts about Newburgh. I was a tiny part of this city after nine years, though disconnected from its overall structure. I felt real affection and frustration daily, and folded it into my work. I forged a home from the dear connections I did make, I received support and gave it back in the form of art and friendship. I navigated construction and litter on foot and on wheels. I watched people build things I could not, I watched some projects flourish beautifully and others get tangled up and stalled out. So I assembled materials that obliquely reflect this and made something simple and silly in a grassy yard by a busy (and often under construction) road. Wheels, scrap metal, canvas strips, spray paint, and chains, all found or donated. A vintage bicycle in the yard was offered when I met this neighbor. The rest, zip-tied together, move in the breeze off the river, anchored by earth and tree limbs.

In 2022, she received two grants: NYSCA Statewide Community Regrant and Awesome Newburgh. Her work focuses on colorful, vintage-influenced abstractions based on memory, ephemera, and a vibrant form-based interpretation of nature and objects.

In 1999, while traveling with a friend from Belize to Tikal in Guatemala, we encountered the biblical scapegoat, wandering as it has for thousands of years through the wilderness. My friend, an Israeli just out of military service, and I were exhausted yet in the presence of the goat, we were overcome with a need to discuss history. A Mayan traveler, walking along the road joined us and we lit a fire and did not sleep a wink. The goat grazed on the edges of the clearing through the night and in the morning visited each of us before departing into the jungle.

Niki Lederer’s found-object sculptures are made from repurposed plastic. She works in the additive process, cleaning and dissecting the reclaimed bottles, removing all product-branding and then reconfiguring the bottles into sculptures. Blue Brack Water, Newburgh Bay, takes its title from the slightly salty mixture of fresh- and sea-water found in Newburgh Bay on the Hudson River. Lederer explores the theme of reusing discarded material collected on her daily travels to and from work, the studio and back home. Lederer is car-free and travels by foot, public transit, and bicycle, making the opportunities to harvest source material vast and plentiful. Each item gathered holds potential as sculpture material. In keeping with her low-carbon philosophy, she is deeply committed to creating new work from previously used materials.

Niki Lederer is a sculptor with a studio practice based in Newburgh, New York. Niki was born in London, Ontario, and raised in Vancouver. She received her BFA from the University of Victoria and her MFA from Hunter College in New York City. Her artwork has been shown at many venues, including BRIC House, Kingston Sculpture Biennial, Governors Island Art Fair, Outdoor Sculpture Biennial Adelphi University, White Columns, Bronx Museum of the Arts, and Wassaic Project. Solo exhibitions include the Pelham Art Center (Pelham, NY), Washington Square Windows (NYU), Open Space (Victoria, BC) and Art Gallery of Ontario (Canada). A screen cut from familiar Tyvek house wrap provides privacy and shade for the porch here at 185 Liberty. The pattern is one of many varied but noticeably wobbly quilt designs popular during the Temperance Movement in the 19th Century. Here taking the common name The Drunkard's Path, it elsewhere might be referred to as Robbing Peter to Pay Paul. Similar designs can be found in the relics of Ancient Egypt. Here, it makes a sign out of the warm embrace of home and gains strength in the wind through the relief of its many small and open weaknesses.

The lights are out and the curtains are drawn as they would be in a city under siege. Blackout curtains fill every one of the Hollywood Squares on the side of this building and above, frozen in mid flight, are two bomb-like shapes. They are simply salvaged smokestacks, dragged from the garbage of a nearby renovation and painted as makeshift cartoon mushrooms. Black comedy: looking up is as good as looking down.

A twin son of carpetbaggers from Rochester, his childhood in the deep south has instilled in him a sense of dark Gothic humor and an appreciation for living ruins. He has maintained a studio on Chambers Street since 2010 and is currently attempting to revive the Goudy Wildlife Club of Newburgh.

Shrink Wall .001 is McMahon’s first exploration into the vernacular of tiling and tessellation. Through a relatively simplistic method of making forms and molds, the inherent qualities of the chosen materials are showcased to create a unique, large-scale wall cladding. Boat shrink wrap, a material often used to protect boats in the winter, is utilized in this work as a way to create a form/mold for casting plaster. Bent steel is formed to make a three-dimensional outline in space and the shrink wrap is then patterned, skinned, and then shrunk around the metal form. Applying heat with a big torch, the plastic skin becomes taught and creates a complex curve around the bent armature. Each form is then cast in plaster to create the repeating forms that are hung on the exterior wall of Wireworks.

Ian McMahon received his MFA in Sculpture and Extended Media from Virginia Commonwealth University and his BFA in Ceramics from the New York State College of Ceramics, at Alfred University. He is the recipient of numerous grants and awards including the Jacob K. Javits Fellowship; NYSCA/NYFA Artist Fellowships in 2014 in Craft/Sculpture from the New York Foundation for the Arts; and a first place Virginia Groot Foundation Grant in 2016. Through large-scale temporal site works to explorative furniture, McMahon’s work coaxes materials out of their everyday processes to extend the limits of possibility. McMahon is based in the Hudson Valley with his home and studio located in Newburgh, New York.

Made with salvaged scrap wood and Muhheakunnuk or “Hudson River” driftwood, A Few Screws Loose is a sculpture built to raise awareness around mental health. Whether it’s the poisoning of Mother Earth’s hands that feed us, superiority in all its hateful forms, or the iGreed OS that dominates modern Western culture, psychosis pervades.
I believe that creative expression can not only be an antidote for mental health imbalances, but they are our birthright. We’re all born artists. This piece symbolizes an intentional step in integrating art more into my life, and hopefully encouraging others to make more art, too. If only as a means to bring the shadow into consciousness. What is your soul longing to create?
Fabricada con restos de madera y de madera flotante de Muhheakunnuk o del Río Hudson, A Few Screws Loose o Algunos tornillos sueltos es una escultura construida con el propósito de crear conciencia sobre la salud mental. Lisa was born in the Bronx, grew up in New Jersey, and found some of the best parts of herself along with enduring friendships while living in Rhode Island and Georgia. Lisa is a passionate people-person, queer Quaker, sustainability strategist, systems thinker, energetic empath, merry musician, and waste slayer by day (Waste Reduction Consultant) for an environmental nonprofit.
This is Lisa’s first attempt at a sculpture, an artform that’s in her blood. Her grandfather was a sculptor; father a psychologist, so the blending of the two disciplines for a A Few Screws Loose is apt. Lisa returned to New York in 2020 and has been living and loving in Newburgh with fiancé (also a Terrain Biennial artist!) along with their pitbull rescue pup, Kidd.

Recently introduced to fiber arts, Marta continues to explore materials to work within traditional crocheting and beading techniques and challenged herself to create common forms with wire and assembled fixings.
Nacidas y criadas en la ciudad de Newburgh, madre e hija se unen para crear dos piezas separadas pero relacionadas que exploran la conexión y la influencia. Installed on the eastern and western sides of the city (312 Grand Street and 76 Maple Street), one of the pieces is predominantly focused on shape and form. The second is whimsy and fun.

Neen Rivera is a nonbinary Puerto Rican artist. In their personal studio practice, they combine ancestral iconography with the modern climate crisis. They work using recycled metals and foraged plant life to create what they consider to be environmental graffiti.
Sam Goldberg is driven by a need to make things with their own hands. As an artist and metalworker, Sam is passionate about creating sculpture using found and salvaged materials. Making art is Sam's way of seeking purpose while living life under a system built on oppression, exploitation, and cruelty. Sam lives in a house in the mid-hudson valley with their partner, 2 cats, and one very old dog.

Mycelium, as demonstrated here, serves as a metaphor for the essential strategies of adaptive relationships within our ever-evolving neighborhoods. Bio-networks explores the multifaceted roles mycelium plays in our environment, from prolific decomposers to providers of nutrients and site remediators. By inoculating mycelium into urban debris and subjecting it to varying conditions, our aim is to reveal both the seen and unseen processes at play. The inoculated sawdust tubes in the front of the site draw attention to the underground network forming around the inoculated grasses in the background. The network of woven fabric above the sawdust tube illustrates the broader concept of this prolific fungal fabric. Bio-networks is visually connected to Yyphaee, installed across the street, symbolizing a unity that transcends property boundaries and celebrating the interconnected lives that surround us. The Seed Ball Workshop invites community members to participate in building a mycelial network and fosters shared stewardship.
El micelio, como se demuestra aquí, sirve como metáfora de las estrategias esenciales de las relaciones adaptativas dentro de nuestros vecindarios en constante evolución. Annie Scott Halaburda, an ecological landscape designer, thrives through hands-on engagement. Her focus is working with native and edible plants in urban settings, fostering social and environmental connectivity. Guided by field observations, she strives to create resilient, emotionally resonant landscapes. Annie developed her approach in community greening at a nonprofit foundation then founded her studio, working with community projects, nonprofits, and residential clients. She holds a Master's in Landscape Architecture from City College of New York and a Master's in Landscape Design from The Conway School. Annie now works with a private firm and lives in Newburgh with her husband and infant daughter.

I am interested in developing projects that create a picture of our universe and the things it contains despite our overwhelming blindness to its entirety. Earth-Moon-Earth Communication (Moon Bounce) is one such project. By harnessing a cosmic event like the ecliptic and phase of the moon and bringing “down to earth,” distilling it into familiar objects and processes, such phenomena can become part of our human experience in turn connecting us to universal unknowns. Earth-Moon-Earth Communication (Moon Bounce) is a performative installation that signals the daily moon phase and peak altitude to passersby. Each morning the host will raise the day's corresponding flag to the height on the flagpole marking the state of the moon for that day. This process will repeat for the duration of the Terrain Biennial.
Estoy interesado en desarrollar proyectos que muestren nuestro universo y las cosas que contiene a pesar de nuestra ceguera ante su totalidad. Comunicación Tierra-Luna-Tierra (Rebote Lunar) es uno de esos proyectos. This work utilizes wood furniture and parts. Chairs are secured at a center table with a special child's chair representing the next generation. I am drawn to chairs as both utilitarian and sometimes as works of art in themselves. They have stories worn into them. I like to create using salvaged parts that become something else (discarding them as a last resort). My work has been mainly smaller sculptures of wood, glass and metal, so this is a departure in scale for me. At the Table is placed on the property of Calvary Presbyterian Church, flanked by the historic Old Towne Cemetery. Nearby, neighbors often gather. It is my hope they see the work and maybe notice this space with fresh eyes.

I was born and raised in the Hudson Valley. With a degree in American cultural studies and education, I worked as a teacher, historical interpreter, and collector and seller of antiques. As a teenager I learned the craft of chair caning. This expanded and for more than forty years I have restored cane, rush, splint, and chairs of Danish cord. In more recent years, I began to make sculpture.
Nací y crecí en el Hudson Valley. Soy Licenciada en Educación y Estudios culturales estadounidenses, he sido profesora, intérprete histórica, coleccionista y vendedora de antigüedades. Cuando era adolescente aprendí el oficio de tejer respaldares y asientos de sillas con ratán. Este conocimiento se ha ido extendiendo y llevo ya más de cuarenta años restaurando junco, caña y sillas de cuerda danesa.
